Description

Moctezuma I was crowned ruler of the great Aztec Empire in 1440, thereby ushering in the golden age of the Aztecs. During his reign, which lasted for nearly thirty years, he shaped the image of the Aztec state with which we are familiar today – a state rich in culture and mythology. A turquoise mosaic in Aztec style decorates the cap, while the barrel is made of special cocobolo wood from Central America. The mosaic is handcrafted, so each of the 87 pieces is slightly different and it is refined by gold inlays with jade cabochons and a central Aztec motif. The gold inlays have undergone a special treatment which creates a vintage effect. The atlatl inspired the design of the cap with its thread-wrapped handles. A triangular-cut green jade crowns the spear-shaped clip refined with an engraving of a quetzal’s feather, while the upper part of the clip is reminiscent of the Aztecs’ traditional nose ornament. The shape of the cone, refined with a hammered-like finish, is based on an Aztec sacrificial knife with an obsidian blade. The handcrafted 18K solid gold nib is adorned with a fine engraving inspired by the Aztec glyph for the heart and a further glyph, engraved on the forepart, represents the second name of Moctezuma I: Ilhuicamina. The mother-of-pearl Montblanc emblem on the cap top is embedded in an engraving of an Aztec sun disc. Four stepped gold bands on the barrel are a special reference to the Templo Mayor, as well as the 87 pieces of the limited edition. This refers to the year 1987, when the Templo Mayor was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
